What Is a Cold Wallet? Cold vs. Hot Crypto Wallets Explained
A cold wallet is a way to store crypto so that its keys are never connected to the internet. Here's why you might need one and how to avoid losing your coins through your own mistakes.
What it is
Whoever holds the private key controls the crypto. A hot wallet stores the key on a device connected to the internet (a phone app, a browser extension). A cold wallet keeps the key offline: on a hardware device or on paper.
| Exchange | Hot | Cold | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who holds the keys | The exchange | You | You |
| Convenience | High | High | Lower |
| Risk of online hacking | Exchange risk | Higher | Minimal |
| Best for | Trading | Small amounts, DeFi | Long-term storage |
Who needs one
If you trade actively, your coins will be on an exchange anyway, so securing your exchange account matters more. A cold wallet makes sense when you hold a significant amount for a long time and don't plan to touch it. The basics are in the lesson crypto: what it is and how to invest in it.
The biggest mistakes
- Losing the seed phrase. Without it, there is no way to recover access to the wallet. More details in the article what is a seed phrase.
- Buying a used device or one that's "already set up": it could have been tampered with.
- Storing a photo of the phrase in the cloud or in a chat.
Our affiliate link. If you decide to open an OKX account, please sign up through it: it costs you nothing and doesn't change your terms. If you trade, the exchange pays Aspiro an affiliate bonus, which goes toward developing our apps and the free Academy. We have no access to your account, your money, or your trades.
- A cold wallet keeps your keys offline.
- It's for long-term storage, not for trading.
- The seed phrase is the only way to recover it, so keep it on paper only.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a cold wallet be hacked?
Remotely, it's very hard, because the keys aren't online. Most losses come from leaked seed phrases, counterfeit devices, and phishing websites.
What happens if my hardware wallet breaks?
Your coins are stored on the blockchain, not in the device. With your seed phrase, you can restore access on a new wallet.
Do I need a cold wallet for a small amount?
Usually not. For small amounts, a well-secured exchange account or a hot wallet is enough.
