What Is a Memecoin? Why It's Speculation, Not an Investment
Memecoins are cryptocurrencies that grew out of internet jokes. Their price can soar and crash within days. Here's why they're pure speculation and how to approach them.
What it is
A memecoin is a coin built around a meme, a joke or a character. The first was Dogecoin in 2013, later came Shiba Inu, PEPE, BONK and thousands of others. Most have no product or revenue behind them — the price rests on attention and crowd sentiment.
Why it's speculation
- No fundamentals: there's nothing to base the coin's value on.
- Huge volatility: −50% in a week is common.
- Lots of fraud: pump and dumps and rug pulls.
- A large share is held by whales — their selling crashes the price.
If you still decide to buy
- Only an amount you can afford to lose entirely.
- No more than a small share of your portfolio.
- A stop-loss is mandatory, and no leverage.
- Don't buy on a wave of FOMO.
On specific coins — Dogecoin and PEPE.

- A memecoin rests on hype, not on a business.
- It's speculation with the risk of losing everything.
- Only a small amount and a mandatory stop-loss.
Frequently asked questions
Can I invest in memecoins for the long term?
It's not an investment: most memecoins have no reason to grow over the long run. Many lose almost all of their value over time.
Why do memecoins sometimes multiply in price?
Because of hype, social media mentions and listings on major exchanges. Such rallies are replaced by crashes just as quickly.
How can I spot a memecoin scam?
An anonymous team, promises of “100x” gains, almost all coins held by a couple of wallets, or being unable to sell — all reasons to stay away.
