What Is a Pip in Forex? How to Calculate Pip Value Simply
Traders say “it moved 50 pips” or “the stop is 20 points.” Here's what this unit is and how to convert it into money.
What it is
A pip is the standard step of price change in a currency pair. For most pairs, it's the fourth decimal place: EUR/USD rose from 1.1000 to 1.1050 — that's 50 pips. For pairs with the Japanese yen, a pip is the second decimal place: 150.00 → 150.30 = 30 pips.
How much a pip is worth
| Size | 1 pip on EUR/USD | 20-pip stop |
|---|---|---|
| 1 lot | about $10 | ≈ $200 |
| 0.1 lot | about $1 | ≈ $20 |
| 0.01 lot | about $0.10 | ≈ $2 |
The value depends on the lot: the same stop in pips can cost $2 or $200.
Why it matters
It's convenient to measure a stop-loss in pips and risk in money. First you place the stop based on the chart, then you pick a position size so the loss stays acceptable. Here's how — in our article on how to calculate position size.
