How to Buy Polygon (POL) in 2026: Step-by-Step Guide
Polygon is one of the best-known networks for scaling Ethereum. Its coin used to be called MATIC and is now POL. We explain what changed, what the risks are and how to buy it.
What Is Polygon
Polygon started as a network that takes load off Ethereum: transactions on Polygon PoS are faster and many times cheaper, while the connection to Ethereum is preserved. That’s why many well-known apps, games and payment services have launched their own versions on Polygon.
In 2024 the MATIC coin was replaced by POL. The new coin is used for fees, staking and running the whole Polygon ecosystem, including solutions based on zero-knowledge (zk) technology. MATIC holders were offered a one-to-one swap for POL; major exchanges did it automatically.
Polygon Risks
- Fierce competition. There are now many layer-2 networks for Ethereum, and users are spread among them.
- MATIC/POL confusion. Outdated guides and scammers may offer a token “swap” on fake websites.
- Dependence on Ethereum. Polygon’s success is closely tied to the success of the whole ETH ecosystem.
- Volatility, like most altcoins.
How to Buy Polygon (POL) on an Exchange
- Account. Signing up on a major exchange takes a couple of minutes. Guide: how to open a crypto exchange account.
- Security. Complete KYC verification, then set up 2FA and an anti-phishing code. Do this before your first deposit.
- Fund your account. Top up your balance in USDT: via P2P from another user or with a card. Step by step: how to fund your account via P2P; why USDT specifically: what is USDT.
- Buy. Go to spot, pick the POL/USDT pair and place a limit order slightly below or at the current price. Why it beats a market order: limit vs. market orders.
- Protect the trade. If you’re trading rather than accumulating, set a stop-loss right away. In Aspiro Trade, signals on 45 assets come with entry, take-profit and stop-loss levels already set.
- Storage. Coins you plan to hold for years are better kept in your own wallet than on an exchange. POL exists on several networks — when withdrawing, check which one your wallet supports (Polygon or Ethereum).
Storing POL: Two Options
| Exchange | Your own wallet | |
|---|---|---|
| Control over the coins | The exchange | You |
| If you forget your password | Support can restore access | Without the seed phrase, access can’t be recovered |
| If the exchange goes bankrupt | Your coins are at risk | Not affected |
| What you need | Just an account with 2FA | A wallet that supports Polygon |
Our partner link. If you decide to open an OKX account, please sign up through it: it’s free for you and doesn’t change any terms. If you trade, the exchange pays Aspiro a referral bonus, which goes toward developing our apps and the free Aspiro Academy. We have no access to your account, funds or trades.
- You don’t need to buy a whole POL — you can start with a small amount.
- Check the network and address on every withdrawal.
- Set the stop-loss before you enter a trade, not after.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are MATIC and POL the same thing?
POL replaced MATIC in 2024. The swap was one to one, and automatic on major exchanges. New purchases are made in POL.
Where do I swap old MATIC for POL?
Only through official Polygon tools or on an exchange. Websites and messages offering an urgent swap are a common scam.
Why do we need Polygon if Ethereum exists?
To do the same operations cheaper and faster. The network is connected to Ethereum, so assets can be moved between them.
