How to Open a Crypto Exchange Account: Step-by-Step for Beginners
Opening an exchange account takes about 15 minutes, but this is exactly where beginners most often slip up: they sign up through a scammer's ad, skip the security settings, or put all their money in at once. Here's how to do it right, step by step.
Step 0. Choose where to open your account
Open your account on a major exchange with a long track record, an app in the App Store and Google Play, and clear withdrawal rules. No "private platforms" from Telegram, and no websites that only the person inviting you seems to talk about. For a detailed checklist, see how to choose a crypto exchange.
At Aspiro we work with OKX: it's one of the largest exchanges, with a convenient app, spot trading, P2P deposits and a demo mode. The guide below works for most exchanges, but we describe the buttons using OKX as the example.
Step 1. Sign up
- Only open the exchange's website or app via a verified link — never from an ad or a private message.
- Sign up with an email or phone number you're sure you won't lose access to.
- Use a unique, long password you don't use anywhere else. Ideally, keep it in a password manager.
- If you have a referral code, enter it during sign-up: it usually can't be added later.
Our partner link. If you decide to open an OKX account, sign up through this link: it's free for you and doesn't change your terms in any way. If you trade, the exchange pays Aspiro a referral bonus, which goes toward developing our apps and the free Academy. We have no access to your account, your funds or your trades.
Step 2. Secure your account
Do this before you deposit even a single dollar.
- Two-factor authentication (2FA) via an authenticator app — more secure than SMS codes.
- Anti-phishing code — it appears in every genuine email from the exchange. An email without it is fake.
- Withdrawal address whitelist — funds can only be withdrawn to addresses you've added in advance.
- Never share your codes with anyone. Exchange support never messages you first on Telegram and never asks you to transfer money "for verification".
Step 3. Verification (KYC)
The exchange will ask for a photo of your ID and a selfie. This is standard on major platforms: without verification you usually can't deposit by card, trade on P2P or withdraw large amounts. More details in why an exchange needs your documents.
Step 4. Deposit funds
The most common ways are buying USDT with a card, P2P exchange with other users inside the exchange, or transferring crypto from another wallet. For beginners in countries where card purchases are limited (for example, in much of the CIS), P2P is often the most convenient — we explain how to do it safely in depositing via P2P.
| Method | Pros | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Card | Fast and simple | Fees and the exchange rate may be worse than the market rate |
| P2P | Many payment options, rate is usually close to market | Only use highly rated sellers, and pay strictly within the trade |
| Crypto transfer | If you already hold crypto in another wallet | The network must match (e.g. TRC20 or ERC20) — wrong network = lost funds |
Step 5. Your first purchase — small and with a stop-loss
Your first trade isn't about making money; it's about learning the mechanics: how to place an order, where to see your position and how to close it. Start with an amount you can afford to lose and set a stop-loss right away.
- Trade on spot (a regular purchase), without leverage — we have a separate article on that.
- Use a limit order to control your purchase price.
- Set your stop-loss immediately after buying, not "later, if it starts dropping".
- Before using real money, try demo trading — OKX has it in the menu.
- Verified links only. Phishing copies of exchanges are the most common way to lose everything on day one.
- 2FA first, money second. An unprotected account with funds is an easy target.
- Keep your first trade small. Its purpose is to learn the mechanics, not to make money.
- Stop-loss right away. No exceptions.
Frequently asked questions
How much money do I need to open an exchange account?
Opening an account is free and requires no money. For your first spot purchase, a few dollars is enough — the minimum order size on major exchanges is very small.
Can I open an account without verification?
You can sign up, but without verification major exchanges heavily restrict deposits, P2P and withdrawals. To use the account properly, it's best to complete it right away.
What does signing up with a referral link give me?
Your terms stay the same and it costs you nothing. The exchange pays the partner part of its own fee if you trade. The partner has no access to your account.
I already have an OKX account. Can I switch to the Aspiro partner program?
Yes: follow our partner link and log in to your account — the exchange will offer to switch you to the Aspiro program. Your funds and trades remain yours alone.
