What Is Crypto Mining? How Cryptocurrency Mining Works
Mining is how the bitcoin network confirms transfers and issues new coins. Here's how it works, how it differs from staking, and whether it makes sense for a beginner.
What it is
Mining is the work of computers that collect transfers into blocks and record them on the blockchain. To add a block, a miner has to be the first to solve a hard computational puzzle. This method is called Proof of Work.
Whoever finds the solution first gets a reward: newly issued coins plus the fees from the transfers. In bitcoin, the block reward is cut in half roughly every four years; this is the halving.
Mining vs. staking
| Mining (PoW) | Staking (PoS) | |
|---|---|---|
| What you need | Hardware and electricity | The network's coins |
| Examples | Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin | Ethereum (since 2022), Solana, Cardano |
| Main costs | Equipment, power, cooling | Locking up coins |

Is it worth it for a beginner?
- It requires investment in specialized hardware (ASICs), which quickly becomes obsolete.
- Whether it pays off depends on the coin's price, network difficulty and your electricity rate, and all of these change.
- Cloud mining is a common scam scheme: it promises "income without hardware." The warning signs are in the article signs of a Ponzi scheme.

- Bitcoin runs on Proof of Work; Ethereum runs on staking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mine on my home computer?
For bitcoin, practically no: network difficulty is far too high, and you need specialized devices. A regular computer would spend more on electricity than it would earn.
Why isn't Ethereum mined anymore?
In 2022 the network switched from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake. Now blocks are confirmed by validators who lock up their coins.
What happens when all the bitcoins are mined?
Miners will receive only transfer fees. Under the network's rules, no more than 21 million bitcoins will ever be issued.
