What Is an Iceberg Order? How Big Players Hide Their Volume

It's hard for a big player to buy a lot at once: their order is visible to everyone in the order book and moves the price. An iceberg order hides most of the size. Here's how it works.

What it is

An iceberg order is a large limit order where only a small part, the "tip," is visible in the order book. When the tip is filled, the exchange places the next portion at the same price, and so on until the full size is done.

Example: you need to buy 1,000 coins at $50. Only 20 are visible in the order book. Once they're bought, another 20 appear, and so on, 50 times.

Why it's used

How to spot one

The sign: trades keep happening at one level for a long time, a lot of volume goes through, yet the order in the book doesn't shrink or refills right away. You can see this in the time and sales feed and in trading volume.

What it means for a beginner

An iceberg is a tool for large participants. Trying to trade off other people's hidden orders is risky: they can be pulled at any moment. For a beginner, it's more important to understand how an exchange order and market infrastructure work, and to always set a stop-loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a regular trader place an iceberg order?

Some exchanges offer this feature to retail clients too. But with small amounts there's no point: your order doesn't move the price anyway.

Does an iceberg always mean a big buyer?

Not necessarily a buyer: icebergs can be used to sell too. And it doesn't guarantee a reversal, since the order can be canceled.

How is an iceberg different from a regular limit order?

A regular order is fully visible in the order book. With an iceberg, only part is visible; the rest is hidden and placed in portions.
