What Is a Sideways Market? How to Trade a Range (Beginners)
A sideways market, or flat market, is when the price moves between two levels for a long time without choosing a direction. Neither buyers nor sellers win.
How to spot a sideways market
- Highs are at roughly the same level — that's resistance.
- Lows are also at one level — that's support.
- Moving averages run almost flat — see moving average.
- Volume usually declines.
How traders approach a range
| Approach | Idea | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Trading the edges | Buy near support, sell near resistance | The range can break |
| Trading the exit | Wait for a breakout that holds | False breakout |
| Not trading | Wait for a clear trend | Missing the start of a move |
A stop-loss is mandatory with any approach: beyond the edge of the range, with a buffer. More on exiting a range in our article on breakouts.
A common mistake
Trading a range like a trend: buying at the upper edge "because it's going up" and selling at the lower edge "because it's going down." That way you lose money on both sides. How to tell a trend from a flat market is covered in trend trading and the lesson on trends and levels.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a flat market last?
Any length of time: from a few hours on a minute chart to months on a daily chart.
What happens after a sideways market?
Usually a strong move in one direction. Which way is unknown in advance.
Does a sideways market matter to investors?
Not much. With a long horizon, months of flat movement are a normal part of the journey and can be used for scheduled purchases.
