DCA Calculator: Average Price with Regular Purchases

Regular purchases of the same amount are the simplest way to avoid guessing the right moment to buy. The calculator works out the average price and the result using the prices you enter.

Average purchase price—
Units bought—
Invested, $—

Calculated from your inputs. This is not a forecast, not a promise of returns and not investment advice. Real trading results can be anything, including a loss.

How it works

You buy the same amount at equal intervals. When the price is lower you get more units, when it’s higher you get fewer. As a result, your average entry price is smoothed out. More in the article DCA: the averaging strategy.

FAQ

What does the DCA calculator show?

Your average purchase price and the amount of the asset, if you bought in equal amounts at different prices. You enter the prices yourself.

Why is the average DCA price lower than the arithmetic average of the prices?

A fixed amount buys more units of the asset at a low price, so the cheaper purchases carry more weight.

Does DCA guarantee a profit?

No. DCA reduces the risk of bad timing, but if the asset keeps getting cheaper for a long time, you’ll end up in the red.
