What Is Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA)? Simple Guide for Beginners
DCA means buying an asset for the same amount of money at regular intervals, without trying to guess the best moment. Here's how it works and where the catch is.
What DCA is
DCA (dollar-cost averaging) means buying a fixed amount on a schedule: for example, ₽10,000 on the first day of every month. When the price is high, you get fewer shares or coins; when it's low, you get more. Over time, your average entry price gets smoothed out.
Example
| Month | Price | Amount | Bought |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ₽100 | ₽1,000 | 10 units |
| 2 | ₽80 | ₽1,000 | 12.5 units |
| 3 | ₽125 | ₽1,000 | 8 units |
In total, ₽3,000 bought 30.5 units, for an average price of about ₽98, even though the price swung between ₽80 and ₽125.
Pros and cons
- Pro: you don't have to guess the bottom or the top, and there's less emotion involved.
- Pro: it's easy to fit into your budget, like a regular bill.
- Con: DCA won't save you from a bad asset. If a company or coin keeps falling for years, you're just averaging into a loss.
- Con: during a long rally, a single lump-sum purchase at the start could have returned more.
DCA is about discipline, not about picking assets. How to choose what to buy is covered in the article how to build a portfolio and in the lesson how a portfolio is built.
Don't confuse it with averaging down a losing trade
In trading, adding to a falling position without a stop-loss is a dangerous mistake. DCA is a plan set in advance for years, not an attempt to rescue a bad trade.
Aspiro Invest is a medium-term portfolio: what to hold, when to review it, and where the protective levels are.
- DCA means buying the same amount on a schedule.
- It smooths out your entry price, but it doesn't fix a bad asset.
- It's a plan for years, not adding to a losing trade.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I buy with DCA?
Most often once a month, from your paycheck. What matters more than frequency is consistency and not skipping purchases when the market drops.
Does DCA work for crypto?
It works as a way to enter, but crypto is highly volatile. Only invest the portion of your money you're prepared to see in a deep drawdown.
Can you lose money with DCA?
Yes. If an asset falls and doesn't recover, regular purchases only increase the amount you've put into a losing asset.
