How to Buy Cosmos (ATOM): Step-by-Step Guide and Risks
Cosmos is called the "internet of blockchains": a set of tools for building separate networks and linking them together. We explain what the ATOM token does and how to buy it.
What Is Cosmos?
Cosmos is an ecosystem of independent blockchains. Developers take the ready-made Cosmos SDK toolkit and launch their own network for a specific purpose. The IBC protocol lets these networks send tokens and data to each other.
ATOM is the token of the Cosmos Hub, one of the ecosystem's central networks. It's used for staking (holders delegate coins to validators, who keep the network running) and for voting on proposals. To learn what staking is, read staking in plain words.
Cosmos (ATOM) Risks
- Ecosystem success ≠ ATOM growth. Networks built on the Cosmos SDK can run without the ATOM token, so the technology's popularity doesn't necessarily support its price.
- Inflation. New ATOM are issued as staking rewards. If you don't stake, your share of the network is gradually diluted.
- Unstaking period. Coins you unstake don't come back right away, but only after several weeks. You can't sell them during that time.
- Competition from other platforms for connected blockchains.
Step by Step: Buying ATOM on an Exchange
1. Open an account on a major exchange and check that it lists the ATOM/USDT pair. Full guide: how to open a crypto exchange account.
2. Complete KYC and turn on two-factor authentication.
3. Fund your account with USDT, via P2P or with a card. Here's how to fund your account via P2P.
4. Buy ATOM on the spot market with a limit order so you don't overpay during a sharp price move. More on this: limit vs. market orders.
5. When trading, a stop-loss is mandatory: it limits your loss in advance. How to choose the levels: take-profit and stop-loss. Aspiro Trade sends signals on 45 assets, each with an entry, a target and a stop-loss; check the app for the current list of instruments.
6. For holding and staking, use a wallet that supports Cosmos. Withdraw ATOM on the Cosmos network. When sending to an exchange, check carefully whether it requires a memo: without it, you'll have to recover the deposit through support.

|---|---|---|
| Who controls the keys | The exchange | You |
| How fast you can sell | Instantly | You first transfer to an exchange |

If you trade, the exchange pays Aspiro an affiliate bonus, which goes toward developing our apps and the free Aspiro Academy. We have no access to your account, funds or trades.
- First understand what ATOM does, then buy.
- The flow is simple: exchange → USDT → limit order.
- Set your stop-loss before you enter, not after.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stake ATOM?
Yes. You delegate coins to a validator directly from your wallet or through an exchange and receive rewards. But when you unstake, the coins are unavailable for several weeks, and validators can be penalized for poor performance.
What is a memo when transferring ATOM?
It's an extra code that tells the exchange the transfer is yours. If the exchange requires it and you leave it out, you'll have to get the funds back through support.
Are Cosmos and ATOM the same thing?
No. Cosmos is the whole ecosystem of networks, and ATOM is the token of one of them, the Cosmos Hub.
