What Is the MACD Indicator? How to Read MACD Signals
MACD is an indicator that shows the trend and its strength based on two moving averages. Here's what it's made of and how to read its signals without overdoing it.
What it's made of
MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) is built from two moving averages, usually the 12 and 26 EMA.
| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
| MACD line | The difference between the fast and slow EMA |
| Signal line | A smoothed MACD line, usually a 9 EMA |
| Histogram | The difference between the MACD line and the signal line |
How to read it
- Above zero: the fast average is above the slow one, and upward movement dominates. Below zero means a decline.
- Line crossovers. When MACD crosses above the signal line, upward momentum is strengthening, and vice versa.
- Histogram. Growing bars mean the move is accelerating; shrinking bars mean it's weakening.
- Divergence. The price makes a new high, but MACD doesn't: momentum is fading.
Where it goes wrong
MACD is built on averages, so it lags. In a sideways market, the lines keep crossing and give false signals. It works best as confirmation of a trend you can already see on the chart.
Don't pile up indicators: MACD and RSI together don't give a "double signal," they give similar information. The "fewer but clearer" approach is covered in the lesson indicators without the obsession. Every trade needs a stop-loss; how to set one is in the article take-profit and stop-loss.
Aspiro Trade offers signals on 45 assets, and each one comes with an entry, a take-profit, and a stop-loss. The first month is free.
- MACD is the difference between two moving averages.
- Crossovers and the histogram show momentum, but with a lag.
- Lots of false signals in a sideways market, so a stop-loss is a must.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the standard MACD settings?
12, 26, and 9: the fast EMA, the slow EMA, and the signal line. Most traders use exactly these.
Which matters more: the crossover or the zero line?
The zero line shows the overall direction; crossovers show a change in momentum. Signals in the direction of the trend are more reliable than those against it.
Can I enter trades based on MACD alone?
You shouldn't. MACD is a confirmation tool; decisions about entry, stop, and target are made based on the chart and key levels.
